Call for applications: Workshop on developing international partnerships and projects

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) have joined forces to develop a training workshop aimed at empowering museums to develop international partnerships and projects.

The programme, supported by ICOM US, is aimed at African and US museum professionals, who are eligible according to the criteria below. The workshop will take place in Washington, D.C., USA, from 3 to 7 October 2022.

The goal of the programme is to promote the exchange of experiences and methodologies that facilitate intercultural dialogue, the identification of allies and resources, and the development of partnerships in international and local contexts. Trainers from various regions of the world will be part of this exchange of knowledge and professional practice, which will in turn strengthen the communication and collaborative work among the members of the networks of African, African American and African diaspora museums.

African museum professionals can apply following the guidelines below. The call for US-based museum professional will be found here on or before 13 May 2022.

To apply for this programme, candidates should meet the following criteria:

• Have paid ICOM individual membership dues for 2022, or commit to join ICOM before the beginning of the programme;
• Fluent in both written and spoken English;
• Occupy a mid or senior management position in a recognised museum or public institution in Africa.

For museum professionals coming from Africa, the programme will cover:

• participation costs;
• roundtrip economy-class flights;
• hotel accommodation with breakfast;
• lunches and coffee breaks.

Visa costs, insurance coverage and other expenses not explicitly stated above are at the expense of the participants.

All applications should be submitted by filling the online form before midnight (CET+1), on 25 June 2022.

All applications must be accompanied by the following documents in English (to be uploaded in the form):

1. A Curriculum Vitae indicating training, work experience, publications and current work responsibilities (two pages maximum);
2. A letter of recommendation from the director of your institution (please use this this template);
3. Copy of the first page of your passport. IMPORTANT: Your passport needs to be valid at least until 30 April 2023);
4. Proof of payment of 2022 ICOM membership fees (copy of the ICOM card with 2022 sticker or official document from the National Committee);
5. Motivation statement answering the following three questions (to be answered on the form):

• How do your current responsibilities relate to the topic of the workshop? (1,500 characters maximum)
• What kind of knowledge and skills do you expect to get from the programme? (1,500 characters maximum)
• How will the training workshop strengthen the projects and activities your museum is currently developing or planning to develop? (1,500 characters maximum)
