CALL TO FILMMAKERS
The Museums Association of Namibia, in partnership with the National Archives of Namibia and the Namibia Film Commission, is proud to launch the Namibia Film Preservation Project, with funding support from the Carl Schlettwein Stiftung in Basel, Switzerland. This groundbreaking initiative is dedicated to safeguarding Namibia’s moving image heritage – from films and videos documenting the liberation struggle and nation-building, solidarity against apartheid, and regional cooperation to productions that capture cultural, social, and artistic expression since independence.
As part of this project, we have recruited two trainee cataloguers who are working with experts and mentors to compile the first comprehensive catalogue of Namibian films. To make this possible, we are reaching out to filmmakers across the country to help us identify and document films in private and institutional collections. We're concentrating first on those productions still on tape or film, rather than on hard drives, as these are most at risk of being lost forever. In the long term, this catalogue will also lay the foundation for future preservation and digitisation efforts.
We invite filmmakers and film owners to complete a short survey designed to capture details about films produced in Namibia from 1980 to the present, focusing on selected themes central to our nation’s history and identity. By sharing information about your films, you will contribute to the preservation of our collective memory and ensure that Namibia’s stories remain accessible to future generations.
If you are a filmmaker or hold film material, please take a few minutes to complete the survey and be part of this important national effort. You can be assured that all copyright considerations will be respected and upheld throughout.
For further information, don't hesitate to contact the Museums Association of Namibia at info@museums.com.na or 061 302 230.
Together, let us safeguard Namibia’s film heritage.
