The (In)Audible Past is an interdisciplinary and international research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the National Research Foundation of South Africa. It is housed at the University of Basel (Switzerland) and Fort Hare University (South Africa) in association with the University of Namibia, the Museums Association of Namibia, the International Library of African Music (ILAM, South Africa) and Basler Afrika Bibliographien (BAB, Switzerland) as well as other individual scholars and artists.
The project concerns itself with audio archives from, in and related to southern Africa. It brings together both young and established scholars from the fields of history, media studies, music and performance as well as affiliated artists. The overall aim of the project is to discuss and define Southern African perspectives on sound studies, unearth lesser-known audio collections and re-evaluate, re-read and most importantly re-listen to better-known collections.
This workshop will bring together those researchers, artists and curators affiliated with the project who focus on Namibian sound collections and Namibian history. The workshop will consist of academic presentations, performances, listening sessions and film screenings all related to the sound history of Namibia.
